The basic BOB Yak Trailers set the stage for imitators, as discussed in the last post, as well as trailers that owe their lineage to the BOB but have gone on in new directions. These inspired cargo haulers have evolved by adding suspension, different cargo configurations, different size wheels, multi-functionality and other features.

BOB’s Ibex trailer was introduced circa 2002. It offers suspension to improve the ride off road and on.

Imitation, the Greatest Form of Flattery

The BOB Trailer has first defined and then dominated the bike cargo trailer scene since it became available in the early 90’s. As evidence of its success there has been a significant train of imitators to follow. Some of these have brought added innovations while others are simply a lower quality knock off.

Gathering together bike trailer videos, I’ve noticed that Xtracycle users have by far been the most prolific with posting their videos.

This seems to be evidence of the inspirational and fun nature of the Xtracycle. When you get on one you just want to party. The inventions that the Xtracycle has inspired include a bike mounted blender system, a neon lighting system sold through the Fossil Fool, music systems that mount onto the Xtracycle’s Snap Deck and much more.

There are two ways to generalize how bike cargo trailers are used:

1. Ride to work, pick up groceries and pick up anything else you can think off and haul it around town.
2. Go on an epic voyage.

While all bike touring voyages are not equal they all seem epic as they are being prepared for and undertaken.

BOB Trailers have become a popular choice for extended bike touring adventures. They have a large capacity, work well over a variety of terrain and are rugged. If they are damaged they can be welded back together by anyone with a gas torch, usually something that can be found even in remote villages.

Working in the online bike world requires that I make a delivery trip to UPS or the post office almost everyday. Most of the time I use my BOB Trailer or Xtracycle except when I’ve got just too many boxes and I need to resort to the car. It gives me an excellent opportunity to test out the capacity of what I can load on my rigs.
